Pleural tapping: 

This is a procedure done to remove the excess fluid in space between the lungs and the chest wall (PLEURAL SPACE). 
 
Normally the pleural space is lined by a thin layer of fluid. In certain conditions like TB / Cancer/ Viral infections/ low protein states, large amount of fluid gets accumulated in the pleural space compressing the lungs and making it difficult to breath.

PROCEDURE :
  • Your doctor will insert a thin needle in your chest wall and draws out the fluid that’s got collected in the pleural space.
  • This fluid is sent for testing.
  • The results help to find out what disease are you suffering from.

THIS PROCEDURE :
  • Will be done at the hospital on an OPD basis.
  • Will take around a couple of hours.
  • Local anaesthesia will be given.
  • Fasting is not required, light breakfast /snacks can be taken.
  • Mandatory for a relative to accompany.
  • Prior appointment is mandatory.
